Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Step 1: Clean the Cartridge Chip

What You Need:

  • Lint-free cloth or coffee filter
  • Distilled water or isopropyl alcohol
  • Cotton swabs (for printer contacts)

How to Clean:

  1. Remove cartridge from printer
  2. Locate gold/copper chip on cartridge
  3. Gently wipe chip with slightly damp cloth
  4. Let dry completely (2-3 minutes)
  5. Also clean contacts inside printer

Important: Never touch the ink nozzles (the part that sprays ink). Only clean the electronic chip contacts.

Step 2: Brand-Specific Solutions

HP Printers

Try HP's Cartridge Reset

  1. 1. Remove all cartridges
  2. 2. Unplug printer for 60 seconds
  3. 3. Plug in and turn on (without cartridges)
  4. 4. Wait for carriage to move and stop
  5. 5. Install cartridges one at a time

Disable HP Cartridge Protection

Go to printer settings > Tools > HP Cartridge Protection > turn OFF. This allows non-HP cartridges to work.

Canon Printers

Press and Hold Method

When error appears, press and hold the Stop/Reset button for 5 seconds. This may allow printing despite the error.

Disable Ink Level Detection

Press Stop button 5 times when prompted. This disables ink monitoring for that cartridge but allows printing.

Epson Printers

Chip Resetter Tool

For refilled Epson cartridges, you may need a chip resetter tool to reset the ink level chip. These cost $10-20 and are reusable.

Firmware Consideration

Epson frequently updates firmware to block third-party cartridges. If cartridges stopped working after an update, look for third-party cartridges with newer chip versions.

Brother Printers

Reset Ink Counter

Some Brother printers allow manual ink counter reset through the maintenance menu. Check your printer's specific model for instructions.

Brother is More Compatible

Brother printers are generally more accepting of third-party cartridges than HP or Epson. If having issues, try a different brand of compatible cartridge.

Step 3: Third-Party Cartridge Issues

Firmware Blocking Third-Party Cartridges?

Many printer manufacturers release firmware updates that block non-OEM cartridges. Your options:

  • Disable auto-updates - Prevent future firmware updates in printer settings
  • Downgrade firmware - Some printers allow firmware rollback (search "[your printer model] firmware downgrade")
  • Buy updated chips - Third-party suppliers update their chips to bypass new restrictions
  • Use OEM cartridges - If all else fails, genuine cartridges will always work

Prevent Future Updates

In printer settings, look for "Firmware Update" or "Auto Update" and disable it. This prevents the printer from downloading updates that may block your cartridges.

When the Cartridge is Actually Bad

Signs of a Defective Cartridge:

  • Chip is visibly damaged or scratched
  • Cartridge was dropped or damaged
  • Ink is leaking from cartridge
  • Works in a different printer but not yours
  • Multiple cartridges of same brand failing

What To Do:

  • If new, return for replacement/refund
  • Contact seller for warranty claim
  • Try a different brand of compatible cartridge
  • Consider OEM cartridges for reliability
