Do thermal label printers need ink?
No. Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive label stock, so the image is created by heating the label rather than by applying ink or toner. That removes the consumable entirely, at the cost of labels that darken with heat and fade over time.
Do thermal labels fade?
Yes. Direct thermal labels are sensitive to heat, sunlight and friction, and they will darken or fade over months. For a shipping label in transit that does not matter. For archive labels, asset tags or anything expected to last, thermal transfer or a laser-printed label is the right choice.
Is a label printer worth it for a small ecommerce business?
It depends on volume. Work out what you currently spend on adhesive label sheets and how much time you lose feeding them, then compare against the machine plus label rolls. Sellers shipping daily generally find it pays back quickly; sellers shipping a few parcels a month do not.
Can I use third-party labels?
